Raja – The Cat Behind OutdoorSavannah

Raja, the cat behind the Raja and David brand.

Raja is a half-savannah, half-bengal female cat who is at the center of the OutdoorSavannah brand alongside her owner, David. Raja is known for her curious and playful personality, capturing the hearts of millions of viewers with her cat enrichment videos.

Raja’s Famous Cat Wall

Raja keeps active both indoors and outdoors. While at home, Raja enjoys watching David add onto their viral cat wall, creating videos showing the DIY process of building cat wall features such as cat shelves and cat climbing posts. Raja is well-known for her athletic feats, running across the cat wall shelves and climbing up the cat wall poles at impressive speeds. She is also known for her purported mimicry of birds and other animals, appearing to imitate the tone and rhythm of other animals by her cat sounds, also known as cat chirps, cat chatters, or cat trills.

Raja stars in the most-viewed cat video of all time, Cardboard Tube Scratching Post for a Cat (I Built A Cat Wall Playground), which has been viewed 2,071,729,522 times across YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.

Raja Loves The Outdoors

While Raja loves playing on her cat wall, she loves being outside even more. Raja was trained to walk on a leash by her owner, David, from the age of 6 months old. David avoided relying too heavily on using cat backpacks and cat strollers to bring Raja outside and instead wanted her to develop the skill of walking alongside him. It took Raja an entire summer to gain confidence walking outside wearing a harness and being on a leash but soon enough she was able to take walks in local parks. Raja’s favorite places to be are outside in forests with lots of tree cover. Raja receives a lot of attention when outside on walks and has gradually warmed up to meeting strangers.

Raja’s Cat Training

Raja’s outdoor training was coupled with indoor training in which she learned numerous tricks such as sit, follow, high-five, stand up and jump. Raja learned tricks by operant conditioning which uses treats and a clicker to mark desired behaviors. Her favorite treat has always been Tuna and Duck gravy!

The most valuable trick that Raja learned was jumping onto David’s shoulder and riding around comfortably. Raja learned this trick in order to make her more accustomed to riding on top of the cat backpack during outdoor adventures. The cat backpack enabled David to carry Raja and hike for longer distances. Raja prefers to stand or sit on top of the backpack rather than rest inside, something that David attributes to her previous shoulder training.

Raja Goes On Road Trips

David knew that in order to travel with Raja, she would have to get used to riding in a car. Car training with Raja went very slow and there were times that David thought that going on long road trips wouldn’t be possible because Raja would meow incessantly while in the car, even on short trips. In order to train Raja to be more comfortable in the car, David used the same operant conditioning process as when she learned tricks. This involved regular visits to the car while slowing increasing the duration and distance driven. Treats were given to Raja every time in order to positively associate the experience. Unfortunately, David did not see any improvement in Raja’s willingness to ride in the car and this entire process was restarted numerous times. After two years of car training however, in summer of 2023, David noticed that Raja jumped into the car completely on her own! Prior to this, Raja had never voluntarily jumped into the car. For some reason, Raja seemed to be more comfortable in the car than before and David took this as a sign that she was ready to go on road trips.
